Future-Proof the Workforce With AI & Employee Upskilling

The advancement of automation, AI, robotics, and machine learning is dramatically changing the nature and number of jobs in the workforce. While companies all over the world are revolutionizing their workforces through automation and AI, many are simultaneously empowering employees and the public to “upskill” and transform their careers within the new landscape.

AI creates uncertainty and opportunities for employees

Technological advances, such as AI, offer the power to improve our lives, increase productivity, and raise our standard of living, but they can also bring about uncertainty and inspire fear, leaving many to wonder, “Will AI steal my job?”

According to PwC’s Workforce of the Future Report, 37% of surveyed workers are worried about automation putting jobs at risk.

According to TODAY at NBC, lifting boxes, loading pallets, and picking and sorting items are just a few examples of things robots do better and faster than humans, with no risk of injury.

While automation and robots are replacing many jobs, the outlook isn’t all bad.

According to the same PwC survey:

  • 73% of workers think technology can’t replace the human mind.
  • 74% are ready to learn new skills to remain employable.

Companies are investing in future-proofing their workforces

Many companies are retraining employees to place workers on the path to the new roles that AI demands. Vicky Nguyen reports, “By 2025, Amazon will invest 1.2 billion dollars to help more than 300,000 U.S. employees get into higher paying careers through upskilling with free education and training.”

Since launching the Mechatronics and Robotics Apprenticeships in 2020, a free 18-month program offered by Amazon, more than 1,700 graduates now work in tech-focused roles with many achieving pay increases of 40%. Amazon wants to empower anyone who wishes to upgrade their technical career by making access to skills training easy, accessible, and affordable.

With the rapid deployment of Industry 4.0 technologies, many companies face a critical shortage of skilled workers. Amazon’s programs to help workers acquire valuable skills in key areas, such as Reliability Maintenance Engineering, proactively address this common challenge. As a Smart Automation Certification Alliance (SACA), a non-profit organization whose mission is to support workforce development through Industry 4.0 certifications for industrial applications including robotics, IIoT, electrical and mechanical engineering, instrumentation, smart factory systems, and related skills.

Secure & Validate Industry 4.0 Skills

Through SACA’s assessment platform, certification assessments are proctored remotely via Honorlock to ensure integrity and validity. “Honorlock is thrilled to be working closely with SACA and supporting its mission to train and certify current and future workforce members in Industry 4.0 skills and best practices,” said Michael Hemlepp, CEO, Honorlock. “With the integration of Honorlock, SACA is helping companies to offer skills testing at any location, whenever a worker is available, with no scheduling required.
